NEW DELHI: Indian actor Sunder Ramu has been accused of being a playboy for dating a different woman every day for a whole year even though he has claimed it was to empower them.
Sunder who has acted alongside popular actor Dhanush said he was not looking for love or a relationship or even a one-night stand.
Sunder instead said he aimed to empower women in a country where gender equality seemed out of reach.
“I want people to start celebrating women. I hope men and women start interacting with each other without all the taboos,” said Sundar according to MailOnline.
He meticulously catalogued every date by taking photographs of the women he dated and the meals they shared, openly posting everything on his Facebook page.
Sunder has dated more than 100 different women aged between 21 and 105, letting them choose the venue for their date, order his food and pay for their meal.
He even dated popular singer and actress Andrea Jeremiah, whom he described as a foodie with a weakness for chocolate-based food, on the fourth day of the challenge.
“I ask some people out, (sometimes) they ask me out on Facebook, they message me on Twitter, some are friends of friends. While we are eating we can sit and share stories. People are coming and sharing such amazing moments. I think it’s nice for them to have someone to listen to them.”
He said his dating experience gave him the privilege of dining in fancy restaurants in Mumbai as well as enjoying a humble coconut by the side of the road which cost next to nothing.
Whatever money that he saved on his own meals was used to pay for the meals of underprivileged children, the elderly or even animals at a shelter.
He also admitted to not being picky about the women he dated, and talked about one Chandra, a road sweeper and garbage collector, who had apologised for not wearing “anything fancy”.
Another woman who stood out among the bevy of beautiful women seen on his arm, was 105 year-old Alamelu. After enduring a nine hour drive to her village, Sundar took her to a temple and watched the sun set with her.
Yamini Bhaskar who was his 87th date wrote in her blog that she believed dating different women was Sunder’s way of empowering them as his dates were always given the freedom to choose everything for their night out.
“I genuinely wasn’t trying to be a hero, but common people can make a difference too – you don’t need to be in power to be empowered,” said Sunder who wanted to make a small difference somewhere.
